This council of social services was started in 1997 as HAPCOSS (Howick and Pakuranga Council of Social Services) which gradually grew to encompass all of Manukau East to become MECOSS (Manukau East Council of Social Services) in 2006. We are an Incorporated Society dependent on funds from various Funders and membership fees.
Currently we have a vast database which extends well beyond our geographical boundaries - from the Panmure Bridge in the West to Maraetai in the East and Dannemora in the South to Bucklands Beach in the North.
MECOSS is the link between the Social Service providers and the communities of Howick, Pakuranga and Botany. We work closely with the community advisors from Auckland Council and the local district health board – CMDHB.
We address the issues affecting people of all age groups, all ethnicities, citizens and new migrants, English and non English speaking people. Our community is unique in many ways and totally unlike any other in the country. We have the very old and the very young, we have the oldest settlers and the latest arrivals, we have those with the richest assets but very poor in income. To address the issues of this cocktail group, MECOSS was responsible for initiating the following projects:
• MEPTS – Manukau East Patient Transport Service
• MESS – Manukau East Shopping Shuttle
• Man Alive
• RAVAH – Rotary Against Violence At Home
